Introductions

Hello and welcome to my web page!
My name is Monica Haerens and I am thrilled to be able to be a part of Whittier Union High School District and even more thrilled to be able to be a part of students' lives!  I have been teaching in the field of special education since 2012 and have loved every second of it!  I received my bachelor's of science degree in kinesiology with an emphasis in fitness and health promotion in 2010 and then went on to earn my teaching credential in moderate to severe disabilities in 2012.  Recently, I earned my master's of science degree in education with an emphasis in special education in 2019.  I had originally planned on becoming a nurse, however, when I had an opportunity to work with individuals who had a disability, my life was literally changed and I realized that my calling was to work with students with unique needs and abilities.  Since then, I have loved getting to know my students and their unique personalities and I have also loved getting to work with their families.  I have met some of the most amazing students and families through my career and I am so grateful for it- my life would not be the same without them!
Working with families is a huge priority to me so I ask that families always feel free to reach out to me via email or phone.  Our goal is to help support our students to become mature and independent young men and women and our teamwork will help us achieve that.
Thank you for the opportunity to work with your son or daughter and I look forward to meeting you!
