Athletic Fields ProjectLa Serna High School’s athletic fields will undergo extensive renovations and upgrades, providing high-quality playing fields to serve a variety of sports, including football, soccer, and track and field. La Serna High School junior Elizabeth Islas will venture to Washington D.C. to see her award-winning drawing on display in the U.S. Capitol after taking the top prize at the 38th District for the 2017 Congressional Art Competition, a national contest that recognizes and encourages artistic talent among high schoolers from across the country.
A La Serna High School senior who has skillfully combined talent in the swimming pool and determination in the classroom, while being continually inspired by her family, is heading to the storied halls of Brown University to play water polo and pursue a degree in bio-medical engineering. Carissa Perez is the high school’s three-time girls water polo captain and all-time leader in goals scored with 463. Her prowess in the water is matched by her academic brilliance, maintaining a 4.31 GPA.
The new California School Dashboard – a tool that evaluates district, school and student performance – was released March 15 for a statewide field test, providing Whittier Union families and educators a glimpse of the new accountability and improvement system before its official release in fall 2017.
The Whittier Union High School District has launched a new electronic communication tool that will help strengthen engagement between students, parents, teachers and school administrators. Already integrated into the District’s Aeries Parent Portal student information system, Loop supports one- and two-way announcements and messaging between any system users through phone calls, text messages, e-mails, text-to-speech and instant messaging.
La Serna High School this school year kicked off its newest academic support program that enlists influential community leaders to guide juniors as they plan their futures and offer words of support to those who may be struggling. HAVEN extends La Serna’s Organized Academic Support in School (OASIS) program, a special intervention course that has turned around the lives of a majority of its students, motivating youths to earn higher GPAs and go on to graduate. The effort is led by teacher Ken LaVigne, a 2012 California Teacher of the Year.
Whittier Union in September hosted its annual District College Fair, attracting hundreds of students and their parents to the California High School campus, where they met with dozens of college representatives and learned how to prepare for college.
