The new California School Dashboard – a tool that evaluates district, school and student performance – was released March 15 for a statewide field test, providing Whittier Union families and educators a glimpse of the new accountability and improvement system before its official release in fall 2017.
Santa Fe High School has been re-validated as a National Demonstration School for AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), a college-readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll in four-year colleges. An AVID campus for more than 20 years and a National Demonstration School since 2001, Santa Fe serves as a model to other schools wishing to implement the college preparation program. Only the top 3 percent of AVID schools reach this status.
During her 35 years as a counselor at Santa Fe High School, Cheryl Redgate has empowered students to achieve their academic, professional and personal goals through compassion, guidance and support. Now, one congresswoman has shined a spotlight on Redgate for working tirelessly behind the scenes to improve the lives of Whittier Union students. U.S. Rep. Linda Sanchez honored Redgate as part of National School Counseling Week.
Wearing batting helmets and fielders’ mitts, students in the special education program at Santa Fe High School swung their bats, ran bases and fielded their positions in a baseball game as part of the third annual Make A Difference (M.A.D.) game – a cheerful event organized by student-athletes and the school’s Associated Student Body. Guided and assisted by the student-athletes, dozens of students wearing commemorative M.A.D. T-shirts had their names announced over a loud-speaker as they approached the field, with friends and family cheering them on in the stands.
The Whittier Union High School District has launched a new electronic communication tool that will help strengthen engagement between students, parents, teachers and school administrators. Already integrated into the District’s Aeries Parent Portal student information system, Loop supports one- and two-way announcements and messaging between any system users through phone calls, text messages, e-mails, text-to-speech and instant messaging.
Santa Fe High School biology teacher Alejandra Gonzalez has been selected for the University of Chicago’s 2016 Outstanding Educator Award, an honor that recognizes exceptional dedication to her craft and the profound influence she’s had on her students, including on the former Chieftain who nominated her.

Whittier Union in September hosted its annual District College Fair, attracting hundreds of students and their parents to the California High School campus, where they met with dozens of college representatives and learned how to prepare for college.
As Whittier Union concludes its first quarter of the 2016-17 school year, the District will begin the process of evaluating data from the previous school year and review its Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) to ensure students are receiving a high-quality, customized education.
Hundreds of Santa Fe High School parents packed into campus classrooms on Oct. 22 to learn about issues relevant to teens today – from college and career options to dating and social media – during the school’s annual Parent Education Day. Launched in 2003, Parent Education Day is an informal and free way to engage Santa Fe High parents and provide them with information on ways to help their children succeed, with each having the opportunity to attend three, 45-minute workshops on a variety of topics.
