Superintendent's Message

February 2024

Dear Whittier Union High School District Community,Superintendent Headshot

As February draws to a close, I am delighted to reflect on the immensely successful month we've experienced in Whittier Union. Throughout this period, we have witnessed outstanding achievements by our students, demonstrating their academic prowess, personal growth, and athletic excellence.

This month, we proudly celebrated our students who were awarded prestigious Posse scholarships and received the distinguished Award of Merit from our Board of Trustees. Our student-athletes also demonstrated unwavering dedication, securing league championships, and advancing to CIF. Additionally, we joyously marked the next steps in the athletic journeys of some outstanding individuals as they committed to colleges and universities.

In line with our commitment to providing diverse opportunities, February also marked Career Technical Education (CTE) Month. Across our District, students explored a plethora of resources and information through engaging CTE Fairs. These events exemplify our dedication to offering expansive opportunities for students to explore their passions and gain hands-on training for their future careers.

Looking ahead, I am excited to announce that during the upcoming Tuesday, March 12 Board meeting, our Trustees will discuss the possibility of naming a building at Whittier High School after the esteemed Mr. Yoshio Nakamura. A decorated veteran of the distinguished 442nd Regimental Combat Team, Mr. Nakamura has been a longstanding contributor to our community, having taught at Whittier High School and Río Hondo College. We invite our community to participate in this meaningful discussion during the public comment session. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the District Board Room, 9401 S. Painter Ave., Whittier.

I extend my sincere gratitude to our dedicated teachers, support staff, administrators, and the entire District community for their unwavering support. Together, we remain committed to providing all our students with the tools and resources they need "To Achieve and Maintain Excellence."

Sincerely,
Dr. Monica Oviedo
Superintendent
