Whittier Union’s dynamic science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) program prepares students to pursue biological sciences, aerospace engineering, bio-engineering and computer science at such universities as Stanford, UC Berkeley and Harvard – joining the next wave of computer scientists, engineers and medical professionals.
District schools have been recognized with the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award, as well as by Newsweek Magazine and STEM.org in their America’s Top 5,000 STEM High Schools list.
Offerings include Advanced Placement and honors classes and courses designed by Project Lead The Way. Whittier Union also partners with Whittier College to provide female students mentorship and hands-on scientific research opportunities through the Artemis Project.
Scholars have participated in NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory Science Bowl Regional Competition and JPL Ocean Science Bowl. They also take part in the District’s annual Science Cup, which challenges students to race an electric boat, construct a water filtration system and create a Rube Goldberg machine.
Every year, the Summer Math Academy at Pioneer High School challenges Whittier-area middle school students and District high school students to complete a year’s worth of advanced math in six weeks. These same students compete against Whittier College math majors in the annual Derivative Bee.
