Whittier Union’s Young Women’s Leadership Breakfast Inspires Students, Career Conversations Whittier Union High School District welcomed top female student leaders from across its campuses to the Young Women’s Leadership Breakfast, held April 10 at the Azar Event Center, for a morning of connection, mentorship, and meaningful dialogue. The event brought together students and professional women from a variety of career fields — including law enforcement, public affairs, business ownership and entrepreneurship, therapy, higher education and more — creating an interactive space where students led conversations and explored future pathways. Seated at tables with industry professionals, students asked thoughtful questions about career journeys, personal growth and overcoming challenges, gaining insight into the experiences that have shaped each speaker’s path. “This event created a powerful space for our students to engage in honest conversations, ask meaningful questions, and learn directly from women who have navigated their own unique paths to success,” Superintendent Dr. Monica Oviedo said. “Opportunities like this help our students build confidence, expand their perspectives, and see what is possible for their future. Thank you to everyone who participated.” Discussion topics ranged from identifying early interests and influential mentors to navigating career pivots and building confidence in professional spaces. Students also engaged in conversations about resilience, including how to respond to setbacks and develop a strong voice in environments where they may feel underrepresented. The program opened with remarks from Board of Trustees President Irma Rodríguez Moisa, who welcomed students and encouraged them to take full advantage of the opportunity to learn from the professionals around them. Board Vice President Josefina E. Canchola delivered the keynote address, sharing her personal and professional experiences and emphasizing the importance of perseverance, self-confidence, and leadership. “It was an honor to deliver the keynote at the Young Women’s Leadership Breakfast,” Canchola said. “I wanted every student to leave feeling empowered—with the confidence, tools, and determination to pursue their dreams without hesitation or self-doubt. I’m grateful that Whittier Union continues to create meaningful opportunities that inspire students and prepare them for success in college and their future careers.” The breakfast concluded with students continuing conversations with mentors and receiving goodie bags as a token of appreciation for their participation. The Young Women’s Leadership Breakfast reflects Whittier Union’s ongoing commitment to supporting student leadership, fostering mentorship opportunities, and preparing students for success beyond high school.
