Superintendent's Message

January 2026

Dear Whittier Union High School District Community,Superintendent Dr. Monica Oviedo

Happy 2026 to all! The new year finds the District moving full steam ahead into an exciting time of the school year – a time when seniors are greatly anticipating the results of their college admission process, and the future Class of 2030 is deciding which Whittier Union high school they will be attending in the fall.

I’d like to give a big shout out to our Whittier Union schools for opening their doors for the incoming freshman class, holding pep rallies, talking up programs and clubs, and allowing the prospective students to feel comfortable and welcome in a new environment. It’s a full circle moment for our student leaders – who were similarly greeted four years ago when they first arrived.

Our Board of Trustees have been busy as well. During a Special Board meeting on January 17 to make a provisional appointment for the vacant seat in Trustee Area 5, the Board unanimously appointed Armando Urteaga to serve the remainder of the current term, which runs through November 2026.

January was also School Board Recognition Month! We wholeheartedly thank our Board for giving us direction and representation, providing vital educational resources throughout the Whittier and Santa Fe Springs communities, championing equity in education, helping our students fulfill their postsecondary dreams of attending college or embarking on a successful career, and enabling the District to reach its goals while upholding its mission, “To Achieve and Maintain Excellence.” Thank you, Board of Trustees, for all that you do!

The remainder of the school year will be a rigorous one for our students, as they work toward final projects and end-of-the-year celebrations, as well as for our hard-working faculty, staff, and administrators, who will continue to motivate, inspire, and shape our future leaders, and do Whatever It Takes to ensure they are college-ready and career-bound.

Sincerely,
Dr. Monica Oviedo
Superintendent
