A Message from WUHSD Dear Whittier Union Community, At Whittier Union High School District, the safety, well-being and sense of belonging of every student remain our highest priorities. We are aware of a planned “nationwide shutdown” scheduled for tomorrow, Friday, January 30, which has been organized as a form of protest against the practices of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and in support of immigrant communities. We are closely monitoring the situation and want to reassure our families that the District’s focus remains on maintaining safe, supportive learning environments for all students. We understand that the current national climate—and the events leading to this day of action—may cause significant stress, fear, or a desire to participate in advocacy. We want to take this opportunity to reaffirm the unwavering values of the Whittier Union High School District and share the concrete steps we have taken to protect our community. In September 2025, the WUHSD Board of Trustees passed a landmark Resolution of Support and Inclusion. The Resolution, entitled Affirming Support for Immigrant Students and Families and Making a Call to Action Regarding Current U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency Enforcement Methods, was not just a statement of values, but a formal policy that reinforces our campuses as safe havens. Under this resolution, the District maintains the following protections: Restricted Access: We do not allow ICE or any federal immigration agents on our campuses without a valid judicial warrant. Privacy Protections: Whittier Union does not collect, track, or share information regarding the immigration status of any student or family member. Staff Advocacy: Our staff is trained to support students facing immigration-related stress and to ensure that school remains a place of learning, not a place of fear. Whittier Union has a long history of standing with our families. We continue to demonstrate this through expanded Wellness Centers at each of our campuses, staffed with professionals ready to provide social-emotional support for students navigating family separation or anxiety. We also fully implement California’s AB 49, ensuring our schools remain a safe haven where every student has a constitutional right to an education, regardless of their background. While we respect the right of our community members to express their views, Whittier Union encourages students to attend school and remain engaged in their learning. Our campuses will remain open and fully staffed to provide students with a safe, supportive environment where their well-being is closely monitored and where they can connect with trusted adults, peers, and school-based resources. We also recognize and value student voice, and we remain committed to supporting students with care, understanding, and respect as they navigate their experiences. By maintaining continuity in education, we aim to ensure that every student feels supported and prepared for success. Whittier Union will continue to be a safe learning environment for growth and opportunity. We are proud of our diverse community, and we will continue to do Whatever It Takes to protect and include every one of our families. If your family needs specific assistance or if your student is feeling overwhelmed, please reach out to your school’s guidance office or Wellness Center. We are here for you. Sincerely, Dr. Monica Oviedo Superintendent
