Birth defects are structural changes that are present at birth. They can cause problems in overall health and affect how the body develops and works. They may range from mild to serious conditions. Birth defects may be diagnosed in a baby during pregnancy or after birth. There are things that can be done before and during pregnancy to help reduce your risk of having a baby with a birth defect.
